Poverty in India is still a great challenge, despite an impressive economic growth in the nation. Mor than 600 million people in the nation still live on less than two dollars a day (the British government claims the figure is closer to 900 million). Regardless of what the actual figure is, it represents a large number of people.
The reality is that there are no simplistic solutions to poverty. Lives are changed one at a time, one family at a time, one community at a time. The people who constitute the ‘poor of the poor’ will never be able to “pull themselves out with their own boot-straps”.
That is why Restore India is involved in such programs as education, health, vocational training, income generation programs as well as youth empowerment programs. Each of these is a piece of the puzzle to overcoming poverty.
